Welcome to my research page. Here you’ll find information on my research activities and interests, which are focused on natural biological processes for removing contaminants from the environment. I am an assistant professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University. Previously, I worked as a postdoctoral scientist in the Environmental Microbiology Laboratory at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland.
I call this page “Maji Bora”, which means “Good Water” in Swahili. This is a fitting title because I first became interested in issues around water while teaching chemistry with the U.S. Peace Corps in Tanzania, where Swahili is the national language. Here is a photo of some of my students and me on Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2006.
